Supermoon phenomenon


Tonight, Saturday, March 19, 2011, an interesting space phenomena will occur. Moon will be in the closest distance to Earth within a period of 18 years. Moon will only 221,567 miles away or 356 578 kilometers.

This phenomenon is referred to as the lunar perigee or 'supermoon'. Some circles associate this phenomenon with natural disasters such as earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But the United States Antarika Agency (NASA) has stressed that this has nothing to do with disasters, especially earthquake 9.0 on the Richter scale and the tsunami that devastated the Japanese territory.

However, it does not mean supermoon nothing to do with the Earth. Climatology Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Maritime, Tanjung Perak in Surabaya to warn, the emergence rob supermoon can result in a number of inland flooding.

Supermoon effect on tides, but the condition does not cause high waves in the ocean.

Of note BMKG Maritim Perak, there are several areas in Surabaya that has tides due supermoon. For example, the area east of Surabaya, started Kenjeran, Gedangan Sidoarjo, Pasuruan height of tidal water to reach 110 to 130 cm above Mean Sea Level (MSL) or above sea level.
